Shanghai Chest Hospital (affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine) was founded on November 2, 1957, as China's first tertiary A-level specialist hospital dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of heart, lung, esophageal, tracheal, and mediastinal diseases. Its first director was Professor Huang Jiasi, one of the four founding fathers of Chinese cardiothoracic surgery, along with vice directors Professor Lan Xichun and Professor Gu Kaishi. In 2004, it became the Shanghai Red Cross Chest Hospital, and in 2005, it became affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
